記憶的溫度_徐瑞憲個展
一直以來,徐瑞憲的創作都致力於連結他對於現象的觀察與人事的感懷,並將這種詩意的結合放在機械性的世界觀當中,創造令人驚艷的形象,這些形象是以動力機械的方式呈現在我們面前的譬喻。
徐瑞憲擅長以簡約輕巧的方式轉化具體的形象。不管是飛鳥、寄居蟹、紙船、醉八仙或是媽媽肚子裡的小嬰兒,都讓我們會心一笑,因為火車是當代的飛鳥,水桶是現代的寄居蟹,紙船承載了童年時期滿滿的記憶,搖搖晃晃彼此交叉的軸承如同酒後的八仙。世間萬物的造型之於他,巧手拈來隨意幻化,我們全然感受不到常見的機械的冰冷或是物件量體的束縛,不只因為藝術家細膩地創造了這些形象,還因為他讓這些形象從最細微之處開始、緩緩地動了起來。所以在《旅行者之翼》中,法國國鐵票譬喻般地轉化成飛鳥的翅膀。不管是行經的軌跡還是前行的節奏,當代的鐵道運輸恰如過往的飛鳥,喀啦喀啦地在軌道上奔馳,載著旅行者跨越廣闊的大陸,跨越一個又一個不同的時空,前往夢想之地;《一種行為》中水桶快速地闔上,就像寄居蟹遇到人迅速躲入殼中一般;最是令人讚嘆的,當然還有在記憶之河中緩緩流過的紙船,在《童河》裡輕輕地滑過,給我們舉重若輕的意象。
舉重若輕是徐瑞憲的看家本事,特別是在動力機械這個領域,這簡直難上加難。要如何將語言上輕盈的隱喻的轉換成機械上可以順暢運作的形象,卻又不繁複累贅以致消磨想像的空間,也不耗用巨大的儀器與能量?這簡直是在問:如何讓大象可以跳舞呢?不管是《九個夢》還是《孕生》,都清楚地展現了藝術家對於世界與未來的想像。環環相扣、牽一髮動全身的因果世界與機械般的世界其實有著異曲同工之妙,如何能夠在這樣的世界中重新找尋生與滅、起源與終點、夢想與記憶、精神與物質的交織方式,並形成新的夢想促使人們能夠繼續前進,恰恰是徐瑞憲的作品一直以來為我們所揭示的方向。
Invisible Warmth of Memories
Shyu Ruey-Shiann’s work is about the connection between the observational world and the internal human affairs. By assimilating the tangible and the physical with the abstract and invisible, he translates what he sees and feels into a poetic worldview in the form of kinetic art.
Shyu Ruey-Shiann is skilled at transforming specific images in a lightweight and straightforward way. Whether it is a bird, a hermit crab, a paper boat, a drunkard, or an embryo in mother's womb, these elements bring us smiles because we realize that the train ticket
is the contemporary bird, the bucket is the modern hermit crab. The paper boats carry full memories from childhood, just as the eight drunken immortals sway hither and to. For Shyu, everything in the conscious world is free to be shaped and realized with humor and wits. However, we do not feel the coldness of machines or the constraints of objects, because his work exudes a human touch and radiates with warmth and empathy. Hence, in Traveler's Wings, the French National Train (SNCF) ticket becomes the birds and they flap their wings to traverse time and space, to a faraway dreamland; while the buckets in One Kind of Behavior quickly slam like the way a hermit crab promptly hides in its shell. The paper boats that are gently floating on a network of cables, River of Childhood, is a wondrous sight.
Taking on heavy tasks in a lightweight manner is a particular skill of Shyu Ruey-Shiann, especially with a medium like kinetic machines which makes art-making ever more challenging. How does one transform subtle ideas into conspicuous movements in the form of mechanical gadgets without losing the grandeur and ingenuity of the imaginative mind? The question is as hard as asking how to make an elephant dance. Whether it is the Nine Stages of Dream or Pregnancy, Shyu’s work clearly shows his conception of the world and the future. The machine as a metaphor for the casual world, Shyu reveals the fundamental questions of life and death; origin and end; dreams and memories; mind and matter, and proposes new dreams and hopes that drive us to keep moving on.
