Kazakh artist Almagul Menlibayeva is known for using surreal imagery to depict the past and present of Central Asian countries. Her artistic practice often examines the environmental and industrial transformations of the region. For instance, she explores the Aral Sea, which has been drying up due to misguided Soviet engineering projects, and the Caspian Sea, where the landscape has been dramatically reshaped by the oil industry. Menlibayeva also applies AI technology to reinterpret Kazakhstan’s vast Lake Balkhash.
